Clearing Past Burdens and Facing Unexpected Project Shifts
The penultimate hour opens on a cathartic milestone for Jiang Yubai as he hands over his final installment, wiping away years of crushing financial obligations. Shedding that burden gives him room to breathe for the first time in his adult life. Yet right as his personal storm clears, Lin Zhixia runs into an unexpected professional hurdle in the laboratory.
Her supervising professor suddenly breaks the news that leadership of her flagship research initiative is being handed over to Chen Che, a senior colleague. Given how much sweat equity she poured into building the project from scratch, the reassignment feels like an abrupt blow.
Sensing her disappointment during a late-night phone call, Jiang Yubai steps in with grounding reassurance. He frames her contribution as the foundational roots of a grand tree, reminding her that organizational labels cannot strip away her core brilliance. That unconditional emotional backing stands in stark contrast to their painful distance back in Genius Girlfriend Episode 18 Recap, highlighting how far their communication has matured.
Chasing True Passions by the Waterfront
Free from debt collectors and past guilt, Jiang Yubai invites Lin Zhixia out to celebrate. During their walk along the quiet waterfront, he opens up about his true ambitions. Instead of chasing lucrative, pragmatic side gigs, he wants to head back to university and pursue graduate studies in physics.
Lin Zhixia meets his confession with immediate, beaming approval. She knows better than anyone how much intellectual passion he buried under family responsibilities. Seeing him reclaim his identity gives her genuine joy, reversing the heartache viewers witnessed during their strained reunion in Genius Girlfriend Episode 19 Recap and their earlier campus hurdles in Genius Girlfriend Episode 11 Recap.
The Binary Star Bond and National Research Call
The underlying truth behind the lab reshuffle soon comes to light: Lin Zhixia was not demoted, but selected as the top candidate for a high-priority, classified national research project. Taking the position demands strict confidentiality and an extended period of total isolation from the outside world. Bound by security protocols, she cannot reveal the assignment's exact scope to Jiang Yubai, leaving her torn between duty and companionship.
Jiang Yubai recognizes her unspoken struggle without demanding secrets she cannot share. Rather than anchoring her to the city out of possessiveness, he gladly promises to be her steady foundation so she can fly unburdened. Their bond mirrors the astronomical metaphor Lin Zhixia previously described over dinner: binary stars that balance each other through equal gravitational pull, never dimming one partner to let the other shine.
Double Proposals and Looking Ahead to the Finale
Knowing an extended separation looms ahead, Jiang Yubai quietly heads to a jewelry boutique to pick out an engagement ring, determined to make his intentions permanent before she heads into the classified research base.
The episode delivers its sweetest payoff when they meet up in private. Before Jiang Yubai can initiate his planned surprise, Lin Zhixia takes the lead and pops the marriage question herself.
Stunned by her initiative, Jiang Yubai pulls out the ring box he had hidden away, transforming the scene into a synchronized double proposal. Their matching vows prove that emotional alignment does not require constant proximity.
